FOREST MAPPING

NZAM has very well established relationships with the major forestry organisations in NZ. Within the industry NZAM is recognized for producing accurate contours and orthophotos.

Forestry companies looking to harvest need to know the shape of the ground beneath the trees to plan for forest engineering, predominantly for roading and skid site locations.

Becoming the more widely utilised method for capturing terrain or surface data is Airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The LiDAR scanner receives returns from the tops of the canopy, throughout the tree and also the ground surface.

Traditional methods are still commonly utilised, using photography acquired before the trees were planted NZAM use photogrammetry mapping skills and resources to produce a set of contours, and define hydrographic features and the existing roading network. The forest company can then import this digital data into their engineering system.

NZAM will often acquire new photography of the forest and supply this as a set of orthophotos to enable net stocked areas to be calculated.
